Admission requirements
Candidate shall meet following conditions to be admitted to the doctoral program:
- Candidates holding a second cycle degree (Masters Degree), an equivalent qualification, or a qualification equivalent to the level of studies (Master’s Degree) awarded by a foreign university, may apply to take part in the competition for admission to the doctoral research program. The suitability of the foreign academic qualification in terms of content is evaluated by the Examining Committee set up for admission to the doctoral program, in compliance with the regulations in force in Uzbekistan and in the country in which the academic qualification was issued, and with the international treaties or agreements on the recognition of qualifications for the purpose of continuing studies.
- Candidates shall have at least three publications (one journal article, two articles in conference proceedings ) at the time of submitting an application
English language requirements
There is no language certificate requirement. It is considered that a candidate shall carry out research in one of the 4 languages: Uzbek, English, Russian, Kara kalpak.
Doctoral research program tuition fee
While, there is no application fee. Phd Program fee includes 1500.00 USA dollars per a year have been agreed by the Graduate School. This applies to all non-citizen students. There are no additional fees. All students accepted to the phd program will be provided payment information after acceptance. The fees can be paid 2 installments (every 6 month).

APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION
Applications for admission can be submitted during the year, the procedures described below:
1. Register online on the University phd portal (https://phd.mininnovation.uz)
2. Login and submit an application for admission to the Doctoral program, include the following documents (as pdf. Files):
- Official transcript or certified copy of university grades from all past degrees, a copy of diploma
- CV describing any professional experience and other qualifications held by the applicant
- Copy of passport
- List of publications
- Two academic reference letters
ADMISSION EXAM
Admission to the doctoral program is through a public selection procedure that involves:
- assessment of the CV and of the research project, possibly based on his/her second cycle degree dissertation
- online interview.
The research project, which must be described according to a standard international format, is relevant for the sole purposes of selection and does not constitute any obligation regarding the subsequent choice of doctoral thesis in the event that the candidate is admitted.
The candidates will be able to see the result of the evaluation on the phd.mininnovation.uz portal. The admission commission makes an interview with the candidate and assesses the candidate with a passed / no passed decision.

COURSE AND THESIS REQUIREMENTS
Duration of the Ph.D. Program
The Ph.D. In Economics of the Samarkand branch of Tashkent State University of Economics is a three-year program. During the three-year program, students have to prepare a research thesis. The Ph.D. Degree is awarded by the Higher Attestation Commission of Uzbekistan after the thesis has been publicly defended and judged as an original contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the relevant field of study.
Attendance
Students must carry out their research at the Samarkand branch of Tashkent State University of Economics except when they do research in a foreign institution or participate to Conferences, Workshops or other activities authorized by the Ph.D. Director. In addition, phd doctoral students can work at universities depending on the employment availability. The university provides the all necessary documentation and work conditions.
THESIS REQUIREMENTS
The thesis generally consists of a brief introduction and three chapters. The two chapters must provide original contributions to the advancement of knowledge, i.e. New theoretical and/or empirical results in the chosen research field. The thesis must be written in English and have an abstract in Uzbek. The thesis is presented to the Ph.D. Faculty before the end of the final year of the Ph.D. Program. Then, the Ph.D. Faculty submits the thesis to two external referees who must provide a formal written assessment of the thesis. The referees may ask for a revision that must be completed by the Ph.D. Candidate within 6 months before the thesis can be formally defended. After 6 months the thesis is in any case admitted to the final public defense. The thesis has to be publicly defended in front of a Thesis Committee.
First year Requirements
During the first year, students must attend courses independently where they needed. Students are expected to prepare a research project for the three years of study at the beginning of the program. The research project should identify one or more issues to be addressed, and be motivated by a short survey of the literature; the project proposal should include a statement of research objectives, and a research strategy. The presentation is public and takes place at the end of the first year of the Ph.D. Program in front of the Ph.D. Faculty and fellow Ph.D. Students. At the end of the first year students have to submit a short written report (two pages) of their research activity and results. The first-year report should include a summary of the research project, and indicate the participation to seminars, workshops and conferences, and any publications.
Admission to the second year
In order to be admitted to the second year, students have to pass first year consideration by phd faculty. In exceptional circumstances, the “phd faculty” can admit students to the second year if they have not failed, showed a fairly good overall performance, and presented a satisfactory research project.
Second year Requirements
During the second year, students are expected to write an original research for the first chapter of the thesis under the supervision of a thesis advisor previously identified among the members of the “phd faculty”. The paper can be in the form of a preliminary draft but should clearly state the research objectives, include a literature review, and provide original results. The paper is presented at the end of the second year in front of the Ph.D. Faculty and fellow Ph.D. Students. At the end of the second year students have to submit a short written report (two pages) of their research activity and results. The second-year report should include a summary of the research paper, and indicate the participation to seminars, workshops and conferences, and any publications.
Third year requirements
During the third year, students have to complete their Ph.D. Thesis under the supervision of the thesis advisor. The thesis is presented at the end of the third year in front of the Ph.D. Faculty and fellow Ph.D. Students. The presentation focuses on the results obtained during the third year, usually, presented in the second and third chapters of the thesis. At the end of the third year students have to submit a written final report on their research activity and results during the three-year period of the Ph.D. Program. The final report should include a summary of the thesis, and indicate any publications.
Period Abroad
Students are encouraged (but not obliged) to do research in a foreign Institution; a university, a research institute or an international organization. The period spent abroad usually follows second-year courses and cannot exceed 12 months. The student’s request to do research abroad must be endorsed by the thesis advisor and be approved by the “Council of University branch”. The request has to include a letter by a researcher in the hosting institution willing to supervise the student abroad. The request is evaluated by the “Council of University branch” taking into consideration the coherence of the student’s research project with the expertise of the external researcher and the fields of specialization of the foreign Institution.
